Sculpture Embracing the Digital

In the wake of COVID-19 and the subsequent quarantine, we found our studies destined to an online format. For any course that involves the creation of physical objects, this was an especially unnerving moment. However, in the final seven weeks of the semester, the students of 3D Printing and Lasers at CMU, an introductory sculpture course, pivoted into their newly found and networked presence.

For this duration, they learned various ways to create and refine 3D models, while mitigating concepts that analyze the ebb and flow of the digital and reality. No longer forced to consider materiality or the constraints of the physical world, the students of 3D Printing and Lasers were invited to investigate our alternative existence; encouraged to embrace the digital. Sculpture Embracing the Digital contains a collection of their work created throughout these distinct times.
